2019 Jozi Women’s Rugby League

The Tshuma Stingers women’s team played their first ever rugby game in March and they were welcomed with a historic score margin of 105 – 0 in favour of experienced Leadhome Pirates Rugby Club. As if that was not too much for the ladies team they were ready the following weekend to embark on new challenges. This time they were tested in the Annual Golden Lions 7s tournament. The ladies faced Mufulira, Pirates, University of Johannesburg and Soweto Rugby Clubs. “We will live to remember the glorious moment when Women’s Captain Khensani Masingi scored the Stingers first try which was celebrated by many while battling it out with Soweto Eagles ladies, said Women’s Rugby Coach Maria Hlaka.

The women’s team further went on to face University of Johannesburg and it was yet another stiff learning curve as the Stingers women’s team went down 63 – 0 at full time. “Our ladies have gained more knowledge and confidence in the game. There is a need to focus more energy on defence, above all general play is getting better and the determination of the team is unbreakable. We are not discouraged by the losses. We are instead encouraged by the ability of the team to successfully complete their matches,” added Hlaka.
