Report: The Midrand and Krugersdorp giants sized each other up on Saturday 2 June 2018 and the Midrand teams’ brace and dominant performance won the day.
The Stingers claimed a fourth win when they beat the Harlequins 24-00 in Midrand and move to the top of the log in the Senior Grand Challenge. While there were also wins for Kagiso Rugby Club and the Alexandra Wolves Rugby Club in the opening of round two.
Prop Donald Mugandani scored the opening try of the match 11 minutes into the first half. Tshuma Stingers denied Harlequins any opportunity to score points showing great defensive skills and team work. Stingers Captain Simbarashe Chadya put in a typically determined performance and scored a cracker in the second quarter of the match after picking the ball at the base of the scrum right in front of the Harlequins try line. Lwando Yiliwe’s capable boots scored a late penalty in the first half to bring the Stingers to a 17 – 00 lead at break.
Front rower Minenhle Dlamini and Rofhiwa Mundalamo made an appearance in the second half off the bench for the Stingers, while Siphamandla Madlala and Caleb Schwarp comfortable returned onto the field of play after their full recovery on shoulder injuries picked up against the Southern Knights.
One Stingers player who can be proud of his performance on Saturday was Hlumelo Mello Kama. The wing sizzled in the Midrand sunshine, scoring a superb try after the Don kicked a loose ball in the Stingers 22 to initiate a counter-attack. The kick was followed by another kick and chase from Hlumelo to dive on it in the opposition in-goal area, before it went dead.
Three converted tries and a penalty allowed the Stingers to hold out against a late fightback from the Harlequins. The win keeps the Midrand team in line with their aim to defend the Golden Lions Senior Grand Challenge Cup.
Lwando Yiliwe kicked three conversion and one penalty for Stingers. Tshuma Stingers Scrum deserves a special mention too for their efforts at scrum time and in the loose.
